Marine Fighting Squadron 251

VMF-251 rolled out of C126 in F6Fs at 2304 and proceeded immediately to the east edge of 8.9/9.9 to begin patrol. The squadron split into two flights. Lt. DeVice lifted late at 2328. Only aircraft available was one F4U-1A. DeVice never formed up with squadron. Red Flight, consisting of four ships led by Maj. Wyatt, took low CAP at 15k to patrol for enemy bombers. Blue Flight led by Capt. MEF4UD consisting of two patrolled high at 22k.

Contact was made and called out by Red Flight, multiple 190s sighted at +20k. No sign of enemy bombers/jabos low. In order to avoid being picked apart, Red Flight ducked into the cloud bank and proceeded back towards C126 to regroup with reinforcements. Blue Flight was Co-Alt+ with the 190s and provided some cover before joining over 126.

Red Flight formed up with friendlies from the larger reserve squadron, however Yellow Patrol unable to reach altitude in time and 190s maintaned control of engagement. DeVice damaged and bailed at 2340. Capt. Morgan shot down Fw 190 at 2345. Wyatt, Morgan, Lt. Lane, Lt. Bodie shot down at 2349. MEF4UD shot down Fw 190 at 2357, shot down at 0007. Lt. Santana shot down at 2358.
