Squadron formed up and climbed to altitude, turning N on approach to assigned patrol sector. Arrived at 25,000ft and settled into patrol of southern end of 13.7.
Contact made by scout with enemy formation in northern 13.8, P-38s sighted at 30,000ft. VMF-251 scrambled for altitude and vectored N to intercept. Squadron sighted bogies to NE at border of 13.7/13.8. Additional P-38s spotted high at squadron's 1 o'clock, but enemy proceeded SW without responding. Wyatt ordered squadron to turn in pursuit.
VMF-251 relayed position and shadowed formation, closing within 1500yds before enemy responded. Red Flight engaged with escorts while Blue proceeded after bombers.
MstWntd shot down two B-24s and forced down third at 2349 before bailing out. Morgan shot down B-24 at 2349. aJoust claimed P-38 at 2350. Trol shot down P-38 at 2351. Morgan bailed with damage at 2352. Trol claimed second P-38 at 2353. Wyatt and Sidle shot down P-38 each at 2354. Wyatt claimed second P-38 at 2357.
Sidle forced to ditch with damage at 2357. Remainder of squadron reformed and proceeded SW back to A77 for rearm. Herder damaged on landing and ditched off runway at 0014. By 0016 Wyatt, Trol and aJoust rearmed, and took off again with JG2 in pursuit of retiring bombers, but enemy out of reach before arrving on station. Squadron returned to base at 0031.
