VMF-251 launched from A15 at 2259 with 7 Yak-9Ts. Sidle damaged or destroyed 5 of squadron's aircraft, plus one P-39Q in takeoff accident. Remainder of squadron provided new aircraft and took off to defent A15. Squadron broke up by flights:

Blue Flight
Capt. Sidle
1st Lt. Trol
2nd Lt. King

White Flight
1st Lt. Roche
1st Lt. Bodie

Red Flight assumed role of detached scout, while Blue and White Flights composed main body of defense of northern approach into target area.

Red Flight turned W/SW after base alerts neighboring objective, and other defense squadrons reported contact with large formation of 109s, but no sign of strike package. Red Flight failed to locate enemy aircraft in warning area and turned E to rejoin squadron. Second sighting N of objective placed enemy Ju-88s IB into base from N. Squadron vectored to intercept.

Red Flight made contact with 109s engaged with other defenders, but turned N to search for bombers. Flight was intercepted by 109s and forced to engage. Remainder of squadron contacted Ju-88s approaching base from N.

Wyatt and King shot down 109 at 2336 before being shot down himself. Trol claimed 109 at 2336. Roche and Millsaps shot down at 2337. Sidle shot down Ju-88 at 2337. Trol shot down 2338.

Sidle and Bodie returned to base and recovered by 2347.
