VMF-251 took off at 2305 from Henderson Field with twelve F4F-4 Wildcats. Division assignments as follows:
Squadron circled to gain altitude. Red Flight maintained close cover at 15,000ft over Henderson Field, while Blue and Yellow climbed to 25,000ft and patrolled outside radar coverage.
At about 2320 encountered large force of A6Ms at 30,000ft and were engaged. Zero shot down by 1Duke1 at 2326. DeVice downed Zeros at 2325 and 2330. Drazz claimed Zero at 2332. MEF4UD recorded victory at 2328. Bodie shot down A6M at 2329.
Blue and Yellow flights sustained total losses by 2330. Drazz ditched at 2332, and Trol downed at 2331.
Wyatt and HAMMERR engaged heavily by large numbers of A6Ms close to field. HAMMERR downed at 2336. Wyatt ducked into cover of field guns, at which point the A6Ms withdrew. Encountered lone B5N at 2347 and shot it down.
Wyatt continued to patrol south of field, towards Allied task group operating in waters off the coast of Guadalcanal. Joined heavy skirmish against enemy D3A bombers, and splashed one at 2354, before returning to Henderson and requesting reinforcements for destroyed CAP.
Wyatt destroyed on ground at 0013 while rearming.
