After Action Report Date of Action: June 20, 2008 VMF-251 took off at 2325 from Henderson Field with eleven P-39 Airacobras. Division assignments as follows: Red Flight Blue Flight White Flight Squadron circled to gain altitude, at 15,000ft. Vectored north from Henderson Field to investigate enemy sightings. Blue Flight further East, Red and White further West. Blue encountered large numbers of D3As, Red and White spotted B5Ns at 18,000ft, all bombers were unescorted. Squadron engaged. Blue Flight engaged D3As MEF4UD downed five D3As in under ten minutes. Herder wounded by rear gunner of D3A and forced to return to base, safely recovered at 2343.Ranger45 crashed at 2337, Spanky38 at 2340. Red and White Flights encountered difficulties in engaging enemy bombers, as they were encountered above P-38 operating altitude. However Wyatt claimed a B5N at 2344, and two more at 2345. HAMMERR downed two B5Ns at 2338, a third at 2340, and another at 2344. Lane downed B5N at 2337. Drazz claimed B5N at 2336. Trol downed another at 2339. Bodie claimed B5N at 2339. aJoust shot down at 2336, Drazz at 2337. Wyatt's nose gear collapsed landing at 0017. Lane and Bodie suffered similar accidents at 0018. MEF4UD shot down at 0013. Trol shot down at 0042. HAMMERR claimed additional victories at 0031, and 0042, both A6Ms, and landed safely at 0056.
