VMF-251 took off at 2259 with six Hurricane Mk.I's. Squadron formed up and began climbout. Arranged:

Red Flight
Lt. Col. Wyatt
CWO4 Millsaps
1st Lt. Roche

Blue Flight
Capt. Sidle
1st Lt. Trol
2nd Lt. King

Squadron climbed to maximum altitude and began patrol of A26, assigned to engage escorts while 357th Death Dragons attacked bombers.

At about 2345 formation of 20+ Ju-88s spotted at about 15,000ft, below squadron. Position of enemy radioed in to HQ, no escorts spotted, and no other friendly aircraft were in area, so Wyatt ordered attack.

Wyatt shot down two Ju-88s at 2348. Trol bailed out 2349. King and Roche suffered severe damage and forced to return to base. King recovered at 2352. Sidle shot down Ju-88 at 2353. Roche crashed on landing at 2354.

Wyatt, Sidle and Millsaps rearmed and returned to patrol station. No further contact made with enemy forces. Remainder of squadron recovered at 0037.
