VMF-251 took off at 2259 in eight Hurricane Mk.Is and three P-40Bs, assigned to escort B-25s of 364th FG to A113 to bomb the airfield. Squadron organized by flights:

Additionally, 2nd Lts. Coronado and Arumugam volunteered for duty as defensive gunners on B-25s.
Red Flight took position as Close Cover, with Blue as Close Support and White as Top Cover. Formation proceeded N to point E of target area, then turned W for approach. Badgley vanished at 2322.
Contact made with enemy approaching from astern and VMF-251 turned to intercept, engaging in running battle. B-25 formation scattered, and enemy able to pick off single bombers. Wyatt shot down 109 at 2336, and second at 2337. Roche shot down 2343. Johnson shot down 109 at 2343, and Sidle one at 2348. Wyatt sustained engine damage over target airfield and forced to withdraw, ditched off A114 at 2349. Johnson was shot down 2356.
Remainder of squadron withdrew safely to A114. Trol, Jones, Bodie, Millsaps recovered by 2358. Sidle, Edgar and Wittie rearmed by 2358 and continued patrols. Edgar shot down 0005. Sidle and Wittie returned to base by 0011.
